At last -- a SERIOUS page about the 'Naked Mile'!

The Naked Mile run at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) was run Tuesday night, 20 April 1999. On this page, we will not only have thumbnail photos of the event, but we will also have INTERVIEWS and DISCUSSIONS of various issues surrounding the run, such as:

  1. What it feels like to run in the race.
  2. Sexism and homophobia sometimes associated with the race.
  3. Why do those grown-ups complain so much about student nudity, anyway??
  4. Responsible naturism (nudism).
  5. Social analysis and insight -- the reasons WHY this wonderful tradition takes place year after year, rain or shine, warm or cool!
  6. Those sleazy Internet rip-off artists -- weren't some of them naked this year? Where'd they get that idea?!??

First we posted the interviews -- and the fight song. Photos from 1999 are now ready!! More essays, and feedback pages will follow soon.

Interview Excerpts

It turns out that everyone had their own reasons for running in the Naked Mile. We didn't plan it that way, but it was cool nevertheless. More exactly, probably all three interviewees ran for several different reasons -- but each chose to emphasize one major one:

V The Sophomore V

I like doing new things, and I think it's really exciting... It's just a cool, once in a lifetime kind of thing.

V The Grad Student V

My politics and my spirituality and my bisexuality all hook up... In my values, I see a theme of the erasure of lines of demarcation that restrict freedom and life energy... Clothes are often status markers in our society, and by erasing status marking we all become human beings on the level with one another.

V The Traveler V

Feeling the wind dance on my body is very stimulating and erotic to me.
