Peel-Off in Palm Springs -- II

Isn't it amazing how we humans divide ourselves into interest groups? Don't you have the impression that these groups keep getting smaller and smaller, more and more finely divided? Remember how you felt when you first heard that there was a support group in town for overweight lesbians with dogs with psychological problems (the dogs, not the lesbians)? Oh, come on, admit it -- the first time you heard of these groups you said to yourself, "Gosh, you mean there are enough of them so that they can have their own group?"

And then you got used to it.

Well, now you've heard the ultimate. Yes, there is a group of gay men who like to get together to spend a whole weekend square dancing with each other -- nude. And they is us. Enough of us to do this twice a year: once in northern California and once in southern California. Maybe even three times -- because they've just announced a similar event for the east coast.

• Peel Off in the Sierra takes place on a long weekend at the end of August; it usually conflicts with the GNI gathering so I can't go.
• Peel Off in Palm Springs happens in May; I attended it last year (1998) and had a ball.
• The newcomer on the block -- Moon Over Maryland -- will be held for the first time in 2000 over Memorial Day weekend (the last weekend in May), in conjunction with a general gay nude gathering run by PANG (from Philadelphia).

One of the amazing things about gay square dancers in general is that a certain percentage of them -- maybe as many as one quarter of them -- have also been known to enjoy dancing naked. This is approximately the percentage who join in a so-called "Moonshine Tip" held at many gay square dance fly-ins and conventions (at which both women and men are welcome). Peel-Offs are not formally connected to the Moonshine Tips -- or, indeed, to any formal square dance association, gay or non-gay -- but many of the same bright, happy, beaming faces show up at all of these events. Once you've danced naked, it's hard to pass up an opportunity to do it again. And again, and again! (See my Men Dancing Naked page for more thoughts and interviews on this topic.)

Almost all of these photos are free! At the request of some of the people in the photos, and because at the time I took these photos I had no intention of making this site a commercial one, nearly all of these photos are free. The only exceptions are the 3 photos in the last set, which involve an immodest amount of sexual arousal and for legal reasons can only be shown to adults. Are you in these photos? These photos have been privately available to Peel Off participants informally for several months. Two individuals requested that their photos be removed; this has been done. I believe that everyone else identifiable in these photos has approved their appearing here. However, I may be mistaken, or you may have changed your mind. No problem! If you appear in any of these photos, you can ask that your face be fuzzed out -- or that they be removed entirely. Just write to me and tell me which photos you are in (list the numbers), your name, method of contact, and which option you prefer.
