TOM!

Tom at Gay Pride

Tom has already appeared on several of our pages -- and on a lot of other websites! It seems that half the times I go somewhere to get naked in public, Tom is there too. Toronto, Ann Arbor, San Francisco, Berkeley... there he is! Grinning and naked and wanting to get into the picture!

The recent Gay Pride march in Toronto (June 2001) was no exception. (We'll have some photos of Tom from that event here.) Tom is so photogenic that the Toronto gay paper Xtra featured a fully-frontal nude photo of him in its Pride photo issue! (This was the issue coming out the Thursday after Pride, 28 June 2001.) We'll have a copy of it once we get to a scanner.)

So Tom and I decided to chat for a bit recently, and he gave me permission to gather photos of him from several different places on the Internet, and put them all here in one convenient place.

By the way, you can write to Tom at <outdoornudity@postmaster.co.uk>. Maybe he can stop by your naked event the next time he's passing through your part of the country.

Enjoy!

So what was the first time you were naked in public?

Just by myself, riding my motorcycle. I got hot one day and decided I wanted to go swimming. I didn't have my suit with me and there was nobody around.

[He thinks for a bit.] Actually, the first time was much earlier than that. The first time was when I was in Middle School. We had to swim that way in the pool. We boys saw each other naked in the showers anyway. I was probably like 12 or something like that.

Our high school didn't have a pool, so I didn't swim naked then. But the Middle School did. The Middle School swim classes weren't coed; they went coed about 2 years after I graduated. [Even though the girls swam in all-girl classes,] girls wore swimming suits and the boys didn't. That was normal back then;I thought all schools did it that way.

Was swimming naked sexually exciting for you?

No.

How old were you when you got hot on your motorcycle?

For the motorcycle thing I was about 17.

So what was the first time you were naked in front of other people other than swimming in school?

At a beach in Florida, when I was like 21. It was a fairly secluded beach, a nude beach but kind of an unknown one. I was just walking along and I thought I saw somebody naked in the distance. I walked closer. The minute I saw that they were indeed that way, I thought well that's interesting. That beach only lasted nude for about a year or so and then the cops started arresting people.

Did you get naked on that beach that day?

Yes.

How long that day were you naked?

Probably the whole time I was there. I didn't change to be that way -- an exhibitionist -- until maybe a year or so before I met you, maybe 1995.

What did you do in the year before I met you?

I can't remember for sure, but marching naked in Toronto [for Gay Pride Day] may have been the first thing. I'd never heard about anyone doing it before, then I found out about it, then I thought it'd be kind of neat, and after the nude beaches I wanted to go the next step, like out in public.

So how did you hear about the Toronto march?

I don't remember. I think I was just surfing or something, found their website, read that they did it and decided that next year I'd have to go see what it was like. So I did, and I met them, and then I did it.

So where have you been naked?

At Toronto Gay Pride, 3 or 4 times. Bay to Breakers, 3 times; Folsom Street Fair, 3 times; 'How Berkeley can you be?' parade, 2 times; Ann Arbor Naked Mile, 2 times; and Castro Street Fair, 2 times. The rest of the places were outdoor things, not really in organized situations like those are.

So what are you thinking as you're walking down the street in public, naked?

It's nice to have the freedom to be able to do it. What with all the important crimes that are being committed out there, being naked shouldn't really be a big deal. As long as you're at a secluded beach, or in something that is known for nudity -- like the events I've been to. Naked Mile has been that way for years, and it was always OK before, and there's no reason why it shouldn't be OK now. The only reason why they stopped the Naked Mile is because of the women being groped and the dangers of it, but they should just tell the runners that if they don't like that part of it, don't do it -- but don't shut the whole thing down! Same thing about photos being posted on the Internet... don't run naked if you don't like that. That's what stopped it, that kind of stuff. Too many people complaining about it. In Europe if they find out that people like a naked beach, they adjust it so that people CAN go naked [instead of just shutting it down].

What advice would you give to other guys who want to follow your example?

Be careful! In this country. Because it's not accepted here like it is in Europe.

Have you been naked in Europe?

Yes.

Where?

Western France, and along the Mediterranean in France. I would have gotten naked in Germany, too, but it was too cold and it was a bad summer that year.

How long ago was that?

Back in 1985, right around there somewhere. I'd like to go again. When I was in Europe that month the only time it was nice was along the Mediterranean, but if you'd go like 40 miles inland it was cloudy all that month.

Do you get any kind of thrill from walking naked?

I like to see the expressions on people's faces, I guess. Everyone's so happy, kind of "way to go" kind of thing. They wish that THEY could do it, but they can't [get the courage]. I just like the freedom of being able to do it.

Do you like the idea that some of the onlookers are shocked?

Actually I kind of wish that they were accepting of it [instead of being shocked]. There's the kind of shock where they don't EXPECT to see nudity, and the shock that they don't LIKE to see nudity. What I like is to change their attitude so that once they see it they're like accepting of it. Like in Europe.

Did you ever get laid as a result of being naked in public?

No.

Any fan mail from being on the Internet?

Um... no, because they haven't had my e-mail address up there yet.

Well, we can certainly change that!

Sure. Thanks!

As we mentioned, you can write to Tom at <outdoornudity@postsmaster.co.uk>. Since he drives to most of these events, maybe he can stop by your naked event the next time he's passing through your part of the country!
