IMEN Gathering -- Friday 16 July 1999

Amazing things happen when people take their clothes off. They sing. They dance. They tell jokes. They make playing cards appear in places where they can't possibly appear.

Yes, it's the IMEN talent show!

It's difficult to explain the atmosphere. On the one hand, it's perfectly ordinary -- at least for a nudist. A fellow with a good voice gets up and sings a song. He's naked. There's no "point" to being naked; he just is. The song isn't about nudity or bodies or anything; it's just a song. It's just that everyone involved is naked (except the drag queens, of course).

And get this: the fact that the singer is naked is inspiring. You enjoy being naked; he enjoys being naked; you're sharing that together. All these naked guys on stage share your values. None of them think you're a freak. All of them agree that there's nothing shameful about their dicks and their bellies and their everythings. All of them are willing to let anyone in the room see what people ordinarily don't get to see in our society. All of them are taking a risk -- a small one, perhaps, but a real one -- and all of them are better for it, as are you.

Some of the talent is only modestly talented. So what? Some of the talent is incredibly so. Wow! I myself started feeling much, much more involved in Gatherings once I started performing in the talent show. It's a wonderful feeling to be naked and to be yourself up in front of hundreds of guys who think it's cool that you're "Jim the magician with nothing up his sleeve -- or his anything else."
