Week 13

Peter is dark and furry, with an olive complexion.

Our interview this week is with Peter, who lives in Toronto and is David's (SpIke's) boyfriend. He's on the board of TNT!MEN, a Toronto gay male naturist group. I conducted the interview at Peter and David's home in eastern Toronto during my nude week at the end of February, 1999. It began immediately after David's interview, and just before dinner. The last few questions had to be carried over to a conversation right after dinner.

OK, let's start with the standard first Dick of the Week question, namely: Just how big is your dick, anyway?

Should I say, "Party size"? [He smiles.] I think it's 7 and a half inches long.

Do you know it in centimeters?

Noop! ["Nope," in a humorous way.]

How big around?

I don't think I've ever measured that. Bigger than a hot dog, I guess more like a Polish sausage? You mean erect, right?

[I nod.] So when you jerk off, can you get your hand around it?

Oh yes. Easily. 

How much overlap? 

[In a nasal, complaining tone of voice:] Jiiiiiim! I guess, actually, thumb and forefinger would be touching, but not an overlap.

So do you lose partners who think that you're too big for them?

Not that I'm aware of.

Which do you prefer: a big dick or a small dick?

I like a relatively large dick, but if it's too hard, then sucking is irritating, so I wouldn't want something that may be uncomfortable for sucking, or if it's incredibly hard.

By the way, why are all your questions related to size?

That's just how I start.

Which is easier to keep hard -- a big dick or a small dick?

I guess a smaller dick. Less blood flow.

What's the biggest dick you've ever had sex with?

Not necessarily memorable. I guess maybe 9 inches.

The smallest?

Um, sort of a large thumb size.

From time to time do guys come on to you just because you have a big dick?

Yes.

How does that make you feel?

It's flattering, it makes me feel desired. On the same hand it's sort of very dick-focused, and I certainly have more to offer than a dick.

[Teasingly] Well, in Jim's Dick of the Week feature we certainly don't want to talk about THAT!

How often do you get the impression that someone is interested in you ONLY because you have a big dick?

Not often.

How old were you when you first realized that your dick was bigger than most other guys'?

I don't know that it IS bigger than most other guys'; I'd say I might have been 38 or something like that. It sort of correlates with nudism, because I wouldn't pay attention to my dick size with my sex partners but at a naked event I'm more aware of it.

Do you remember an incident or a time when you first realized other people were more uptight about their bodies or their dicks than you are?

It's something that I've become aware of, sort of a gradual process. But then you see people changing clothes at the gym, and they quickly put their towel around them, or keep their t-shirt on when they remove their underwear so that they're never totally naked.

You're cut, right?

Yes.

Which do you prefer in other men? Cut or uncut?

I've had much more experience with cut, but I do find uncut pen ises intriguing, interesting, desirable. The uncut ones that I saw at the nudist colony in Cap d'Agde [a nudist city in France] were very interesting because the foreskin was so long. The dick looked more like a spigot.

Is your father cut or uncut?

He's cut.

Does your father have a big dick?

My father's pushing 80. He used to have a big dick, as I remember, when I was a preadolescent. I think it's shrunk. Last time I saw him naked it didn't seem as large. 

Of course at the gay naturist gatherings you've danced naked.What does your dick do when you do that?

It tends to just hang, but I can -- by thrusting my hips -- make it bounce up and down, which is exciting.

When you're dancing naked, do you think about how moving your body will move your dick? Do you do anything on purpose because of the way it's going to cause your dick to swing?

Yes.

Why is it exciting to, so to speak, dance with your dick?

There's certainly a sense of freedom, liberation. Generally in life your dick is confined. I suppose if you wore skirts or lived in a culture where your dick wasn't as confined it might be different.

What do you like the most about your dick?

I like the smoothness of the skin. I like that other people acknowledge it.

What do you like the most about having a dick -- or a big dick?

It IS a center of pleasure -- of sexual excitement. It seems like if I didn't have it I wouldn't have that sexual excitement or sexual energy.

What do you like the least about having a dick?

I don't think I can come up with anything... I don't feel there is a disadvantage or a dislike.

[David enters the room, having heard the question, and he answers: "NOT BIG ENOUGH! People don't notice the rest of him, that's what he doesn't like about his dick." Peter continues:] I'm quite happy with it.

Has your dick ever gotten you in trouble?

Can't think of a time. 

Were you the kind of kid who was a nudist at heart from the get-go, or were you more repressed as a child?

I would say there were nudist elements in me but also repression at the same time. I can remember being uptight about my body -- and other times unselfconscious.

So what was it that made you a nudist activist?

It feels right to me. It feels like something that I want to do, and when I feel that I want to do something, it just makes sense to do it. I also see the hypocrisy of our society when we have all this shame around our own bodies.

When did you first "see" this hypocrisy, consciously?

Well, in some ways when you challenge the rules, then that hypocrisy becomes more evident. I can remember during the gay revolution [a few years ago in the 1970s] wearing nail polish, or a woman's garment, and how much that challenged people's attitudes about gender. What was the question? [When did you first "see" this hypocrisy, consciously?] By wanting to challenge the law that one must have one's genitals covered.

I noticed that your boyfriend David has a dick. What do you like the most about it?

It's very insistent -- very -- he gets hard very quickly. He can sustain his hardness for a long time. He found that disturbing growing up: that he would get an erection when it wasn't appropriate, or he thought it wasn't.

Is his bigger or smaller than yours?

Smaller. 

How does that make you feel?

It doesn't make me feel one way or the other.

You and a friend were the first two people to walk nude in the Toronto gay pride march, correct? When was that?

Three years ago, in 1996. Actually the year before that I wore a g-string, but I didn't really get the same attention I got when I was totally naked. However, I did march naked in the Stonewall 25 New York parade in 1994.

How did THAT feel?

That was exciting. I was unprepared or wasn't expecting to go naked. I was wearing a leopard bikini. We happened to meet up with the Radical Faeries and a number of them were already naked in the parade, so David said, well here's our chance. It also felt fairly safe: there were hundreds of cops everywhere but nudity didn't seem to be the issue and we were joining 6 or 12 other Faeries who were naked.

One of the more exciting things was that once we entered Central Park there was a guy who was incredibly intrigued about us being naked. We talked him out of his clothes -- which was not very difficult to do. He had a beautiful body and I did find that very exciting -- letting someone else experience the delight of being naked. Also, after the parade, in the park somebody came up and asked if he could feel my dick, which was very New York direct.

Tell me more about getting the guy out of his clothes.

I do remember that his friend was very uptight about it, and his friend, who was just a friend, not a lover, sort of threatened divorce or said HE WAS LEAVING if he got naked. But in spite of that he did walk naked in the main road of the park for probably 10 or 15 minutes. We just talked about what we were about. I don't know if I was a confirmed nudist at that point, although I'd been to GNI a few years in a row before. We had also been to a Body Electric evening event which was 300 naked men in the Stuyvesant Room of some hotel on Lexington Avenue -- an older hotel, in a ballroom. They put plastic over the broadloom and naked men would squirt you with oil for massage purposes.

Has that happened to you before -- seducing someone into nudity?

Yeah, actually when we were involved with [another Toronto gay naked group] we had a naked dinner at a restaurant, and the waiter was part of the restaurant staff and fully clothed to start with -- but we got him naked, too. I think we have photos of getting him naked. It WAS a lot of fun, and he enjoyed it, too.

How do you tell that someone will be receptive to your advances? You said the guy in New York was "incredibly intrigued"?

He approached us. I think if somebody approaches you, wants to talk about what you're doing, I think that you sense them being receptive to the idea. We had somebody come up to us in the Toronto Pride Parade two years ago who asked how long we had been naked and whether the police had hassled us. When we said no he quickly got undressed and pranced around. That was exciting -- to have somebody join us.

This was the guy with the shaved head?

Yeah.

Are the Radical Faeries into nudity a lot?

It's certainly a component. There has been nudity at every Faerie gathering that I've gone to, but it's not a main component. Actually I was surprised that they were so naked in the New York march, because they often wear Faerie-like costumes or radical drag.

Are you a Radical Faerie in some sense?

I used to go to Radical Faerie events; I like the fact that they're out in the country and there's an aspect of camp and creating your own environment. It was somebody who went to the Radical Faeries who told me about GNI, and since I've been in GNI I find it much more satisfying; it meets more of my needs. One thing about the Faeries that bothered me was a rejection of their urban homosexual side, and that was something that I was proud of.

How did it happen that you decided to expose your dick in the NYC parade? Had you and David talked about it before?

I can't remember. Maybe David was aware that I would get enjoyment or power from that. I guess obviously I was into pushing some boundaries by wearing a g-string or bikini underwear, instead of Gap shorts and t-shirt. I certainly love looking at naked people -- men and women -- I'm inspired by them.

Tell me more.

I guess also by setting an example or doing it myself it will encourage others to do it.

What's inspiring about seeing naked people?

It seems there's that saying -- it's fun looking at naked people, I do find it pleasurable, fun. I don't know; I can't really analyze it.

You have a lot of pen is-oriented art in your house.

Do I?

OF COURSE you do. [I'm puzzled because he seems to be slightly offended by my statement, and I didn't mean it in an accusatory way.] You have almost as much as I do in my house!

David has "The Heartthrob," by Philip Hare. Oh, I have a few things by him too, the pen is angels or flying pen ises. There's the piece in the bathroom where the cock is sticking out the fly in the underwear. I would say there's several male nudes, but I don't know if it's dick-oriented. Do you think it is?

Well, I think I was mostly referring to the nudity, but because this IS the Dick of the Week I phrased it in dick-oriented terms.

[Calling into the next room] David, do you still have that drawing of me that Roman did, up in your room?

David: Yeah, I pointed it out to Jim this afternoon.

My boyfriend from 1979 to 1981 did a few drawings of me naked.

Anything else you want to say about dicks in general or your dick in particular?

David: You LIKE them! They are your friends!

I was certainly intrigued by a dick that I saw this past weekend.

Anything else?

[Shakes his head "no".]
