Holy Pen ises to Appear in India!

They call it the Shivratri Festival, and it's held once a year in the holy city of Varanasi in India. Varanasi (also known as Benares) is thought to be the oldest city in India, and it is spiritually under the control of the great Hindu god Shiva. On Shivratri, Hindus and holy men from all over India come to celebrate Shiva's birth. And that means, of course, naked men.
Naked men? How come?!?
Jainism is a non-Hindu religion which historically grew out of Hinduism. One Jain sect's priests live nude... we've visited their quarters in Varanasi and will have photos and information soon!
We're on a nude trip around the world! Starting in mid-January 2002, almost 10 weeks long, we'll be looking for naked men in a lot of different situations in a lot of different places.
Visit any tourist shop in Varanasi and you can buy postcards like the one above and the ones soon to be shown here. Holy men called sadhus don't spend all their time nude, but some of them do get naked for religious purposes. One of the things they do is perform certain yoga exercises which show the power over their bodies and their bodily desires which their religious accomplishments have given them.
Hindu holy men, naked except for flowers worn around the neck, return to the town of Varanasi after worshipping Lord Shiva.
For example, in one of these exercises they wrap their genitalia around a stick (try doing THAT with your clothes on!) in a way that shows that their genitalia no longer feel pain like ordinary men. At other times they cover themselves with ashes (a symbol of Shiva) and sit naked on the famous "ghats" (steps) leading down to the Ganges River in Varanasi.
This year, Shivratri is 25 March 2002.
