I met Eric (as he prefers to be called for this interview) through a mutual friend who likes photographing naked men. He seemed personable and intelligent, and I gave him my number. I was happy to hear, when the phone rang a few days later, that it was him. I thought, "Hot damn!" and then, as I got to know him better, learned that I was not his type (sigh). He was apparently uninterested in a romantic relationship with me -- even though I'd jump his boner almost any time he wanted (ahem).

Since then, Eric and I have talked on the phone about 6 or 8 times, always about interesting things. I found myself wondering, if he wasn't attracted to me, why he kept calling me -- returning my calls on occasion, sometimes just calling out of the blue. Isn't that sick?? Here's a nice young man, showing he's interested in me as a person, not as a sex object, with no ulterior motive that I can figure out, and I'm questioning his motives???

I still haven't figured that one out -- the possibility that he might just be a nice young man seems clearly ridiculous to me (grin) -- but along the way Eric mentioned an erotic preference which intrigued me: he's attracted to guys who have small dicks. Given that every normal, healthy, red-blooded American man likes large dicks, I figured I had an interesting curiosity on my hands. What a daring pervert! How dare he question centuries of gay culture and eroticization! What strange events in his childhood led him to this extremely abnormal preference? What went wrong? Where did his parents fail him??

Well, as the author of Jim's "Dick of the Week" pages I figured it was my duty to report this unnatural mutant in our midst. As I talked with Eric, I made a stunning realization: he's just like the rest of us. But different. He wants someone to hold him, to hug him, camp out with him, sleep with him, suck his dick -- just like the rest of us normal people do. And just like you and me and normal people everywhere, he likes pen ises. It's just that he likes a small pen is -- can you imagine! a small one! -- and seems not to consider this a disease or disability in any way.

I know, I know -- that's pretty strange, eh? But as some old gay sage once told me, "Everybody is somebody's type -- even you." (By which he meant me.) So if you have a small dick, read on about this fellow who, perversely and unnaturally, likes you just the way you are.

Note to the humor impaired: I hope it's obvious that I'm joking above. However, the form mentioned in the next paragraph is serious.

ric came over to my house on a recent Friday to look at the pictures I took of the Ann Arbor "Naked Mile" run. He's an athletic kind of guy -- he really likes volleyball -- and he was intensely interested in the photos I'd taken there (for reasons which should be obvious once you read the rest of the interview). He agreed to be interviewed for my Pen is Central page about why he'd wanted to see every single photo, digital and printed, that I'd taken, and after he'd looked at all the photos of last year's run in N Magazine.

o what was so fascinating about those photos?

The guys were definitely the type that I'm interested in because they're just completely natural. It's what I've always been attracted to. Unfortunately that's hard to find in the gay community because the gay community seems to be all about the rock hard gym body, shaved balls, and the attitude that goes along with it.

Tell me more about what attracts you to a naked guy.

The pictures are definitely what's on my mind: the complete openness and naturalness and beauty of the naked body. Especially in a social setting like that, where it's connecting the people who are naked together -- seeing them in a vulnerable state, because they're naked, but they're not really vulnerable because they're just the opposite, completely open.

Yeah, there was a LOT of male bonding going on during that whole thing.

Yes, and I personally can relate to that in my experience rather recently in college we had a similar event which was the "B1 Bun Run" at Colorado State. And there is an immediate bonding when you are naked and exposed with your peers in a situation where there are clothed individuals all around you. Definitely a wonderful bonding experience.

Tell me more.

To see some friends that I have seen on a regular basis every day at school and to be naked and nude right next to them--you just simply connect with them in a way you haven't before and you see parts of them literally and figuratively that you haven't before, and that's your much closer connection.

So tell me something you saw at the Bun Run, literally and figuratively, that drew you closer.

To get onto the subject of penis size... noticing friends who were small endowed or had small penises, which I'm very attracted to, brought me closer to them in the sense that that physical attribute turned me on.

bviously you know that the -- pardon the expression -- "standard" in the gay world is a BIG dick, and you like small ones.

Most definitely (smiles). And I know it is unfortunate in my eyes that there is such a hype about a big dick. I wouldn't say necessarily I'm NOT attracted to it, because it's about the person for me, but it's a definite turn on to have a small penis to me. I'm not attracted to a large dick in and of itself.

How old were you when you first noticed you were different from the general gay world in this respect?

Probably rather recently, within the last couple of years. I had always been aware of my sexuality and that I'm attracted to guys while growing up. But my exposure to a naked man or peer or naked boy was always in sports or an athletic setting where I was in the showers together with them -- and I would definitely say that there's a majority of smaller dicks out there than big dicks. So my ideal in my head was actually shown in the real world. So therefore I just thought that that was the norm as far as dick size. And then when I became more involved in the gay community, in the past couple of years or so, I discovered there was an obvious influence of big dick and size queens and such...

And how old are you now?

I'm 26.

hich do you think looks sexier -- a small hard dick or a small soft dick?

I think that is a definite difference on those. They are BOTH extremely hot. I've always been extremely attracted to the small flaccid dick because it is very aesthetically pleasing to look at a naked male body and to see the lines and the musculature and the small dick just fits with the form of that visual. That is very beautiful to me.

And the erect small penis is very sexy as well but that's in a different sense, because it usually is in a sexual situation, therefore it's viewed up close and with a different perspective. But both are extremely attractive.

How big is too big for you?

I wouldn't say anything is TOO big for me because I have had boyfriends in the past who have had very large dicks, but it was the person I was attracted to, so therefore the dick was not too big per se, but if I were to be talking specifically about a dick I mean probably anything under 7 or 6 inches or under.

If you were designing your perfect boyfriend, how big would his dick be?

Probably about 4 inches. (Tilts head back and smiles.) Or a little under, maybe (big broad smile).

Have you ever had a boyfriend that size?

Mine's probably about 6 inches hard. Soft, it varies by temperature.

What do you want to know, interviewer?

Well, we should describe you. You live in San Diego...

The basics? The physical basics? San Diegan, I'm an artist, student, surfer, enjoy nature, camping, 6' 2", 165 lbs, blond hair, blue eyes, would be attracted to someone with probably all those similar characteristics, athletic, very regular guy, probably atypical from the gay scene guy, but someone who's definitely got a good heart and all the basics.

So how are they going to find out what you look like?

You're working me for a picture, huh?

Well, it crossed my mind!

Um hum! Well, they'll have to meet me in person. We'll see the non-picture responses first and go from there. In regards to small dicks again, I'd like to point out that that although my likes and dislikes now might seem atypical, I have done a little bit of research and this preference was very typical in the Greco-Roman time period. It was shown in their art and their writing that the small dick was what was thought to be very beautiful, and it was a representation of beauty and the aristocratic upper class of that time period. Slaves and foreigners were depicted in art as having very large hanging dicks. A small dick was shown to represent the opposite of that. And in that sense, if you look at Greco-Roman art and sculpture, that would be a good representation of how I see the beauty of a small dick. A large one to me seems a little bit too much like an appendage that's just hanging and distracting from the beauty of a naked male body.

here is the phrase I've heard in the gay community, "Anything more than a mouthful is wasted." Have you heard that?

(Chuckles.) Yes I have and needless to say I would agree. That's another reason why small dicks are the best.

Have you ever been fucked by a big dick?

No.

By a small dick?

Uh... [He thinks]... I would say, not completely. Experimented with that. That's not generally what I like to do, but I would be more apt, extremely, to do that with a smaller dick, if that's the right person.

What DO you like to do?

I like very sensual sex, and I guess I would like the versatility that a small dick offers, going both ways as far as penetration goes, but all other areas of sex are a very important part that I enjoy.

So you 're neither top nor bottom, but a switch.

I guess that would be an easy way to describe it. But I think it all depends on the interaction between yourself and the person you're with at the time.

How about a photo from the neck down?

Maybe. Not at this time, possibly in the future.

ou're an artist. What type?

Various types. Currently I'm doing paintings and sculptures. But I do many other sorts of artistic work.

Any nudes?

Not in the literal sense, but it incorporates itself into some of my abstract art. Different phallics showing up in different forms in my work.

You don't mean like "nude descending a staircase," do you?

[Smiles and laughs; gets the point.] No.

The sculpture -- is it also abstract?

That's still a series that's in my head so it's partially abstract.

Can I put up a picture of your artwork?

Sure. [This will come later.]

ow let's go back to that nude run you did. Was there something special about the bonding because you're gay?

That bonding experience is probably different for a gay male in that situation because it's more of a straight male ritual than a gay ritual. The gays are a bit excluded from it because it has more to do with learning and power than it does with sexuality (which the gays attribute to it and the straights do not), and that's why the gays are probably a bit terrified by it in their late youth as well.

Tell me more about the B1 bun run details.

It was the first snowfall in Colorado for that dorm -- for which snow accumulated on the ground that night. All the guys -- it was just the guys -- would get naked and run all the way around the dorm and a good part of the rest of the school would accumulate and watch it.

And you did that one year?

I did, probably on a smaller scale. My run was pretty quick and short, but I was there (laughs) and I ran back in and ran back out -- there was a lot of guys that did that. But the real exciting part was the period before when we were all getting undressed, and the guys were slightly nervous and anticipating the event and it had that energy in the air, and they thought, "Hey, here I am stripping and I am getting naked" -- and that's when we were the closest, too, in one part of the hall before we ran out.

Do you still keep in contact with some of those guys you ran naked with?

Actually I do not.

But you don't regret doing it?

Not at all. It was wonderful.

If I wanted to take photos of that event, would it be possible?

Yes. You would just need to plan with Mother Nature to get the right date, because that's what it's contingent upon!

Have you heard about the "Nude Olympics" Princeton, which also take place the night of the first snowfall?

No, but I knew that Notre Dame does the same -- a first snowfall run -- and I believe it's called the Bun Run there as well, but I don't know the specifics.

o there MUST be something going on at that age with nudity and bonding and all that. Did any other guys get naked on a regular basis?

Yes. Another event happened with the rugby parties at our school. These rugby parties would be at the various players' houses, and the freshmen had to attend that party naked, while everybody else at the party was dressed. [Although I wasn't on the team, I attended one of those parties,] and that was very titillating! However, there were a lot of people there and the freshmen always clumped together in the middle so I never saw what I wanted to see. But I knew it was there.

What's the most exhibitionistic thing you'd like to do (or do) nowadays?

I think that I would probably like to be nude or naked in a situation where nudity is NOT the norm, but where there is no fear of being illegal or fear towards my best interests. I think I'm still looking for that.

Want to do the Naked Mile in Ann Arbor next year?

I'm there!!!! (Smiles). That'll be tough to be hands off [the other runners], though!

What might you do?
